Sailing and boatbuilding – the original subjects of this blog – are now the subjects of the new Petaluma River Heritage Center near the D Street bridge. Housed in an erstwhile livery stable, the new center opened its doors to the public last Sunday. Inside, visitors admired a traditional wooden sailing craft. Outside, children practiced dry boating, and additional wooden small craft floated on the river for all to see.

The heritage center is surrounded by the new Steamer Landing Park, where there is ample room for walking, sitting in the sun, and exercising dogs. Perhaps someday soon there will be a community garden, an item on the heritage center’s wish list. Someday, too, aspiring boatbuilders may be able to rent space inside to follow their dreams.
